Alphonse Maillot – PIERRE MAURY – PRÉDICATEUR – FOl et VIE – LXXXX – No 3-4 – Juillet 1991.

Pierre Maury Preacher A Maillot

“Take and proclaim only the Word, not the life of a man, even mine, and proclaim Jesus Christ, still Jesus Christ, and always Jesus Christ. Do not let the people who have come leave without their having received from Christ, peace, consolation, freedom and comfort. Prepare a sermon and a good one! Preach! Never tire of preaching”.

Alphonse Maillot was born on November 24, 1920 in Paris – Ménilmontant, and died on December 5, 2003 in Clermont-Ferrand. Pastor of the Reformed Church of France, he only knew two parishes: Lamastre in Ardèche (1945 – 1955) and Clermont-Ferrand (1955 – 1972). As a gesture of their fraternal esteem, these churches allowed him to devote himself to intense biblical work, resulting in about fifty books intended for all those who want to listen to and spread the Word of Christ. On top of this parish ministry we must add 7 years of itinerant ministry.

If you are wondering how this relates to Barth, it may be difficult for those who do not read French. This paper, which you can access on my blog by following the link at the top of the page, was a tribute by Alphonse Maillot given in 1990 on the occasion of the centenary of Maury’s birth. Maillot was a very distinguished and much loved Reformed Pastor in France, who, as mentioned above, wrote some 50 works on various biblical themes and exercised an itinerant ministry in France for many years.

Barth is mentioned several times in Maillot’s tribute in connection with Maury’s famous preaching ministry eg:

Barthian theology and that of Maury were made to meet each otherop cit p. 26.
